Roberta Grant, returned to her Heavenly Father on July 10th, 2023 at the beautiful age of 91 surrounded by her family.
Roberta, born on January 7th, 1932 in Millbrook, New York to Katherine and Robert Johnson Sr., immediately brought joy into the world. Roberta went on to graduate from Millbrook School Systems.
In 1968, she relocated to Jersey City, NJ from Newburgh, NY with her children. While living in NJ she met two great friends Mozelle Matthews and Elizabeth Kelly who became her family. In 1974 she met Howard Grant and the two were inseparable from that point on. Roberta and Howard were married for over 40 years. She worked in the Nursing field until her retirement.
Her caring spirit and generous heart could be felt by anyone she encountered. She had a special gift of not only seeing the good in people but bringing out the best in them as well. Roberta was passionate about gardening and shopping. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found traveling the world. She was an avid traveler who enjoyed the serene beauty of the world from Europe to Africa to the Caribbean.
She was also an active member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was an integral part of her husband's ministry as a Pastor/Presiding Elder serving as a First Lady and District Consultant. Her love, smile and compassion were felt by all.
She lived a full and vibrant life. Her family meant more to her than words can describe. She was a fiercely dedicated mom to all her children, raising all five of them to go on to accomplish great things. Family came first and was above all else next to hard-work, values in which she instilled in all those around her.
Roberta was predeceased by her parents, Katherine and Robert Johnson Sr.; her son, Marshall D. McNair (Marty); her sister, Gladys Johnson; her brothers, Frank Johnson and Robert Johnson Jr; and her granddaughter Shareka Baisden.
She is survived by her husband Presiding Elder (ret.) Howard L. Grant and her four children Ronald L. McNair (Robin McNair), Beverly Barrett, Denise McNair, and Gerald McNair; as well as her stepchildren Leslie Cherry (Victor Cherry), Terrance Grant, Tonia Robinson, and Desmond Grant; her four siblings Alice Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Dorothy Johnson, and Gloria J. Johnson; sister-in-law Thelma Wells; 20 grandchildren, 31 great- grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; special extended family Pastor Joseph Marshall (Tracey Marshall) ; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be missed more than any words can express but she will be forever in our hearts.
